What Are Soft Skills and Why Do You Need Them?

Even when you think you have all of your ducks in a row with your education and career training someone throws out "soft skills" on a job description. "Soft skills" sounds pretty vague, right? What are soft skills anyway and why do employers make such a big deal about them? Soft skills are actually a big deal and understanding and improving your soft skills will be crucial to your success in just about any job role.

What Are Soft Skills?

Soft skills are a skill set which basically helps you do any job better. They can include skills such as:

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Empathy
  • Problem-solving
  • Creative thinking
  • Conflict resolution

These are the skills that maybe got skipped in school or even in college, but which employers insist you must have in order to be a good employee.

Can Soft Skills Be Learned?

There are some who claim soft skills are packaged up with your DNA and personality, but this is not the truth. The truth is that some people do naturally have these skills in abundance, but that does not mean you can't learn them or strengthen them if they are not your strong point. Soft skills can most definitely be learned, but the tricky part is in identifying which skills you need to work on. The lack of soft skills is usually identified through constructive criticism from employers, teachers, friends, or family members. If you are not receptive to this type of criticism then you will have a hard time identifying and working on these skills. Listen to criticism when it pops up and take mental note of which skills need improvement.
