Depression Warning Signs While Out of Work
Unemployment is a fertile ground for depression. When things disappoint us, especially career-related things, it can really work on our mental health. If you are currently out of work, it is very important that you be aware of the warning signs of depression.
Changes in Sleep Patterns
This is one of the first signals of depression. If you find yourself struggling to get sleep or you find yourself sleeping too much, both of these can be signs of depression. Establishing a good bedtime routine, and incorporating some stress-releasing practices into your life can help.
Changes in Eating Patterns
The next most common sign of depression is changes in eating patterns. Eating too much or eating too little can be signs of depression. Depression affects people in different ways. If your eating patterns are changing drastically, it may be helpful to talk to a counselor about your feelings. Some times our feelings are too overwhelming to deal with alone. If you have a housemate you trust, ask them to help you stick to healthy eating habits during this time.
Lack of Motivation
Another sign of depression is a complete lack of motivation. Although your life is most likely very different now that you are out of work, it is important to set goals and work toward those goals. Finding your next great job is dependent on you taking the steps that will lead there. If you find that you simply do not have the motivation to work on your goals, you should consider talking to a trusted friend or family member.
